Overhaul of IWC Cal.852 Old Inter

IWC Round Old Inter: Cal.852

Symptoms: Poor accuracy and automatic winding failure

Repair contents: Overhaul, case cleaning, automatic winding part replacement

Repair cost: Overhaul: 27,500 yen + parts: 16,500 yen Total: 44,000 yen

We disassemble, clean and reassemble the watch. I think the most common type of Old Inter is the Cal. 8541, but we also receive requests for the 852 and 853. Although the structure of each movement appears to be the same, some parts may not be compatible.

Assemble the automatic winding unit. A symptom of a malfunction that we sometimes receive inquiries about is the deterioration of the rotor core that supports the automatic winding rotor. It may be worn out and the automatic winding rotor may not turn properly, or the rotor core may be broken and unable to wind. In the past, we used to create rotor cores, but now we order them from overseas and replace them. The height and other factors vary depending on the caliber, so we estimate the cost each time. The approximate cost is around 15,000 to 20,000 yen.

The rotor core of this watch was still usable, but the winding claws had worn down to about two-thirds. These claws are lubricated with high-viscosity watch oil, but even if the oil deteriorates over time, wear will continue to progress as shown here.

Although the claws were worn, they were still usable, but the customer wanted to replace them, so we ordered them from overseas. Most Old Inter parts are difficult to obtain in Japan, so they are imported from overseas. The cost of the parts this time was 16,500 yen.

The prices of parts for old calibers such as IWC and Omega have been rising in recent years. Imports from overseas are based on current market value, so an estimate is required.

Repairs require parts to be sourced from overseas, so they will take 1 to 2 weeks longer than the usual four weeks.

We will continue to provide updates on repairs.
