Rolex Datejust: Reference 1603 Caliber 1560
Symptoms: Poor accuracy (unmeasurable) / Deformed hairspring
Repair contents: Overhaul, spring and gasket replacement, case and bracelet cleaning
Repair cost: 27,500 yen
I took it apart and cleaned it. It was made in the 60's and shows signs of heavy use. The balance spring is badly deformed and no longer works as expected.
The hole for the second wheel (the gear with the minute hand) has become deformed and widened. It is adjusted by hitting it with a chisel to tighten the hole, but there were traces of it having already been tightened during a previous repair. In the 15 series, the hole for the second wheel often widens. This is where individual differences in precision and other aspects come into play.
Repair any deformed hairspring. This is a part that directly affects the accuracy, so care must be taken. If the hairspring is severely deformed, it may be beyond repair.
I touched the hairspring, so the beat error changed. The error was beyond the range of motion of the hairspring holder to correct the beat error, so I adjusted it by directly moving the hairspring.
The time mechanism has been assembled. Adjusting the balance spring will change the accuracy, so various adjustments are required. Even if you make adjustments at this point, the accuracy may change, so you need to make adjustments while the watch is running.
Due to the structure of this movement, the dial and hands are attached before the automatic winding unit.
I put together the automatic winding unit. The screw on the balance cock is damaged, so I polished it. The photo shows it before polishing.
We often adjust the balance spring, but this is a delicate process and we adjust it while running tests, so it may take longer than usual.
We will continue to introduce various projects in the future.
